Lodestar Counselling
Finding your way back to you.
During times of difficulty or transition, we can easily feel off-course, out of alignment with what matters most. A lodestar is a guiding light used to find direction when life gets tough. Whether you're navigating life transitions, hoping to deepen connection to yourself and others, or just wanting to feel more ease in your life, I am here to help.

A real human to help you navigate real problems - I have over 20 years experience, a broad base of expertise and a deep passion for my work.
About Counselling
Wondering what to expect from counselling? I provide a confidential, judgment-free space where you can get to the heart of the matter, feel truly heard, and find support as you take steps toward your goals.
I am here to listen, ask questions, offer feedback, and share skills and resources. We have very few spaces in our lives where we get to slow down, reflect, and truly hear from ourselves. I invite you to make this space one of them.
We will demystify the therapeutic process by creating a clear, flexible plan together. This serves as your guide, defining your goals and mapping your progress so you always know where you are heading.
My Core Principles
Confidentiality
What we talk about stays between us. I am transparent about the boundaries of confidentiality, including what happens if I am ever concerned about safety. We discuss this in more detail during our first session.
Choice
People typically come to counselling to effect change, to find relief from distress, address problems, and live with greater enjoyment. I help you clarify your goals and share strategies to get there. You always have choices about areas of focus, approaches we take and the pace of our work.
Collaboration
Counselling is dynamic and active. We consider things together, sharing what we notice, the questions we have, what is working, and what feels stuck. You do not have to know exactly what to say, and you do not have to be ‘good at feelings’. You just have to start.
Respect
Exploring personal issues takes courage. While we all have times of struggle, we are not all in the same boat. Respect means seeing you as an individual and understanding that your specific experiences, including the weight of trauma, inequity, and oppression shape how you have adapted to navigate the world.
Things to Know
Counselling Sessions
Counselling sessions are offered by phone, video, or in person. Each session is 50 minutes, plus 10 minutes for note taking and resource sharing. You are welcome to participate in this part of the counselling hour if you wish; collaborative note taking can provide a great opportunity to consolidate what emerges in therapy.
Ethics
Clients can expect ethical practice in accordance with the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. Click here for more information about the complaints process through the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists and view the NSCCT Complaints Process Infographic here.
Free Consultation
I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to assess your needs and determine fit. Contact me to get started.
Fees
Counselling fees are $190/session. Most insurance benefit programs provide coverage for Registered Counselling Therapist services. I provide e-receipts; please check with your insurance provider for details of their coverage/reimbursement.
About Laurie

For over 20 years, I have worked in diverse settings, including private practice, employee assistance programs, community organizations, post-secondary education, Indigenous communities, and correctional facilities.
My goal as a counsellor is to help you identify and improve the areas of your life that feel challenging, increasing your well-being, enjoyment, and connection to yourself and others. I understand that everyone's experience is unique and informed by identity, personality, culture, history, and exposure to various types of stressors, both acute and chronic. My work is informed by attachment theory, which helps us understand how our early experiences shape the way we connect with others and ourselves today.
Outside of my professional practice, I am a mother, partner, animal lover, gardener and artist; I bring the lessons from these facets of my life into our work together.
Accreditation
I am a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association and a Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT-24-003) with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists.

Areas of Focus
I offer a confidential, safe space to learn more about yourself, your relationships, and how to create a life of greater meaning, ease, and fulfillment. While my work is tailored to your specific needs, most of my practice centers on three key areas:
Navigating Life Transitions & Personal Growth
Life rarely moves in a straight line. Whether you are a university student navigating a new chapter, an adult re-evaluating your path in mid-life, or facing a major life event like a break-up, retirement, the various stages of parenthood, or another new chapter, I help you find your footing. We work on:
- Clarifying your values and intentions when you feel off course.
- Moving through periods of uncertainty, grief, and loss.
- Navigating ADHD or other diagnoses and executive functioning challenges.
- Strengthening boundaries and building resilience.
Emotional Well-being
When we are constantly under stress, we often lose touch with our own needs. If you are feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in difficult patterns, we can create space to pause, reflect, and heal. Our work here focuses on:
- Managing anxiety, depression and overwhelm.
- Processing the weight of trauma or grief.
- Addressing substance use and creating healthier coping strategies.
- Developing self-compassion, managing perfectionism, and recovering from burnout.
Relationships & Emotional Literacy
Building healthy, lasting connections takes practice. Whether you are working on communication, boundaries, or understanding your own emotional landscape, I provide a non-judgmental space to grow. This includes:
- Strengthening your communication skills and setting clear boundaries.
- Understanding and navigating patterns of anger, conflict and repair.
- Learning how to safely express needs and build deeper connections with others.
My Approach
With over 20 years in the field, my specialized training and experience with different modalities allow me to co-create therapeutic maps that fit the individual, not the other way around.
In addition to various types of talk therapy, I also enjoy incorporating creativity, mindfulness, and body-based practices into our work, as these experiential practices can often help us process what words alone cannot. I draw from several evidence-based approaches, including:
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- Mentalization-Based Narrative Exposure Therapy (MBNET)
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
- Attachment-based therapy
- Psychodynamic approaches
Because much of the process of change happens outside of our sessions, I also often offer curated resources such as podcasts, books, and videos, allowing you to choose if and how you want to build on your goals between our meetings. This is entirely optional and serves as an extra tool to support your journey. We work as a team to determine the right path forward, ensuring you have the tools to navigate your world with more clarity and confidence.
